Map of Fort Bowyer and British siege positions on Mobile Point, 1815.

Map, 1815, of Mobile Point depicting Fort Bowyer and the British siege positions in the area. It was drawn by Sir John Fox Burgoyne and given to Captain Robert Tristram Ricketts, the British commander who accepted the surrender of Fort Bowyer at the end of the War of 1812. Stating a scale of 1" = 300 yards the map depicts the fort and its location on Mobile Point. It also notes the positions and types of artillery set up on the point, as well as the locations of the British headquarters, camp, and landing area. In addition to the map of the general area, two studies of the fort are also included. One presents a plan of the fort that notes the location of the furnace needed to heat shot. The second is a sectional drawing of a specific fort section indicated on the plan of the fort. The present site of Fort Morgan, Fort Bowyer was named for Col. John Bowyer. Related materials in the Ala. Dept. of Archives and History include a pencil sketch of the British encampment on Dauphin Island drawn by Burgoyne. The Dept.'s Public Information Subject Files also have related materials in the Fort Morgan folder of the County Subject Files and in the Fort Bowyer folders in the War of 1812 Subject Files.
